One of the most populous and culturally diverse cities in the world is Mexico City, also known as Ciudad de Mexico by its native inhabitants. Like me, if you’re fascinated by architecture and art, a walk around Mexico City will make you feel like traveling through time.
The remains of the central Aztec temple, Templo Mayor, can be seen only a stone’s throw away from Mexico City’s majestic cathedral, proving that the city’s Aztec legacy is very much alive.
As you wander the streets, you’ll see a mix of colonial-era buildings like the Palacio de Bellas Artes and more modern structures like churches and plazas. It’s worth visiting the observation deck atop the Torre Latinoamericana, which provides a fantastic view of the area.
Museums
After London, Mexico City has the most museums of any city, with around 200 to explore. The region has a wide variety of museums and galleries to satisfy a variety of interests and preferences, such as the National Museum of Anthropology as well as the University Museum of Contemporary Art.
Unfortunately, the majority of Mexico City’s museums are closed on Mondays. The National Palace and the Templo Mayor Museum are among the most well-known examples of attractions you can’t miss, so plan ahead and skip the museums on Mondays if you want to get the most out of your trip to Mexico City.
Something to keep in mind is that lines frequently form outside of popular attractions like the National Anthropology Museum during the peak tourist season, so I recommend you consider purchasing your tickets early.
Teotihuacan
Teotihuacan is home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins in all of Mexico, so if you don’t have much time to sightseeing, make sure to visit that one. This attraction is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and, as you can imagine, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the region. The gigantic remains of the city date back approximately 2,000 years.
Plaza del Zocalo
The Zocalo has a position of preeminent significance inside Mexico City’s historic district. This Mexican touristic place has been a witness to the passage of countless years of history, beginning with the development of the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan and continuing with the growth of the current city of Mexico City.
On one front, it is faced by the majestic Palacio Nacional, while on the other, it is bordered by the magnificent Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. The area is usually busy with activities, including performances by local artists, commerce from street merchants, and many visitors.
